In this GIS blog I will be posting maps which I have prepared. Click on the maps to view a larger image. Sometimes you may have to click a second time on the map in order to bring the wording more into focus.

Week 8 : Washington D.C.'s Crime Analysis for Year 2000

This was a very interesting lab to do!

Deliverable 1: Base map of Washington D.C. for Crime Analysis, Year 2010
This is an interesting map to because it shows the centralized areas of crimes committed and that theft is the crime most committed. In the beginning I was confused about geocoding the addresses, but I eventually figured it out.

Deliverable 2: Washington D. C. Police Stations with Crime Proximities
This map shows the proximity of crimes committed and  police stations with buffer zones of .5, 1 and 2 miles. I chose to color code each police station in relation to the number of crimes committed within their buffer zones. As the graph shows, the 3rd district had the most crimes with 419 committed within its buffer zones.

Deliverable 3: Washington D.C. Density Maps of Burglaries, Homicides, and Sex Abuse Crimes
These maps show the densities of various crimes committed and the areas in which they are created. The 2000 census population map is shown for comparison of population to crime locations.

Deliverable 4: Washington D.C. Auto Theft Crimes at Various Times of the Day
These are auto theft density maps within a 24 hour time period. The most auto thefts were committed in the evening between 6:00 pm and midnight. I don't like the fact that the graph is shown on a 24 hour time frame, while the maps are shown using the 12 hour clock. Also, the graph should have been made larger, as it is hard to read. I suppose I tried to place too much information on one page!
